When Joe Biden beat Donald Trump in 2020 many people celebrated, believing that democracy had been saved. Although I was very happy to see Biden win, I did not believe democracy had been saved. At the time I thought Biden’s victory meant that democracy in the US still had a chance to survive. To make an extended baseball metaphor, if a home run meant democracy and a foul ball meant the failure of democracy, the reelection of Donald Trump would have meant the ball landing two sections into foul territory. However, the election of Joe Biden meant the ball was still in the air and could end up in either fair or foul territory
