The evolution of how baseball is played over the last century and a half or so has been more dramatic in some areas than others. For example, since Babe Ruth ushered in the home run revolution in the 1920s, offense in baseball has remained largely the same. The strategic emphasis on the stolen base has ebbed and flowed, walks have become more important and new metrics have been invented, but the role and value of the hitter has remained largely the same.
