In mid-2019, there were about twenty candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for President. Many of these candidates dropped out before the voting started. Others withdrew early in the primary season. On balance running for president did little to enhance the national profiles or future prospects of those politicians. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders were nationally known progressives before the campaign and remained that way afterwards. Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand went back to their senate jobs having gained little by running for president. Amy Klobuchar probably slightly enhanced her national name recognition. Others like Beto O’Rourke and Julien Castro may have damaged their national standing by running for president.
